Puberty
Women ovaries contain all the ova she will ever produce since they are born. The stage in their lives which they start to be released is known as‘’puberty’’ (10-14 years).
At the same time the first ovuation takes place, the ovary also releases female sex hormones called ‘’oestrogens’’ into the blood stream which brings the development of secondary sexualcharacteristics. In girls these are the widening of the hips, the increasing growth of the breastes, of hair in pubic region and in the armpits, and also and increase in the size of the uterus andvagina. Once the changes are complete the girl is capable to have a baby.
Puberty in men occurs at same time as the women. The testes start to produce sperms for the FIRST time and also releases ahormone called ‘’testosterone’’ into the bloodstream. The male secondary sexual characteristics are the enlargement of the penis and testes, the deeping of their voice, growth of hair in pubic region,armpits, Cheste and face. Both sexes presesnts rapid increase in their growth rate during puberty.
Beside the physical changes at puberty there are emocional and psychological changes regarding with thetrasition stage they are passing through (adolescence)
The menstrual cycle
Ovaries release an ovum about every 4 weeks. As each develops, the amount of oestrogens produced by it increases. Thishormone acto n the uterus and thickers its lining and develop more blood vessels.
The pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain produce two hormones wich promote ovulation, and these are: the‘’follicle-stimulating hormone’’ (FSH), and ‘’luteinizing homone’’ (LH). They stimulate maturation and release of the ovum. Once released, the follicle which produced the ovum develops into ‘’corpusluteum’’, a solid body. This produced ‘’progesterone’, which affects the uterus lining, as the oestrogens, making it grow ticker and producing blood vessels.
