Jaragua National Park
This Park is located in the southwestern part of the Barahona Peninsula, near the southwestern border ofthe Dominican Republic.
Limits:the islands of Beata and Alto Velo, as well as Los Frailes and Piedra Negra cays.
Area: 1,374 km2

Jaragua National Park sustains aunique sample of numerous ecosystems belonging to important biogeographic provinces of Hispaniola, which historically has served as center of plant and animal speciation for the Caribbean. Parkrepresents the only portion of coastal marine lowlands of the "South Paleoisland” of Hispaniola under protection.

Established in 1983 byPresidential Decree No. 1315 of August 11. Spanning the southern slopes of the Bahoruco Mountain Range from Oviedo to Cabo Rojo. Includes dry forest, mangroves, and scrub, as well as land and marinehabitats

The technical studies that supported its designation as a National Park were conducted during 1981-1982 by the Subministry of Natural Resources fromthe Ministry of Agriculture, with cooperation from the German Social Technical Cooperation Service (DED).

The Park is formed by a series of marine terraces origin that appearlike giant stair steps, as well as coastal plains. Physiographic and dryness has represented a historic natural protection to the area

Flora
The flora of this area is characteristic of the Subtropical Dry Forest Life and has a significant population ofcactus and other species of slow regeneration adapted to the high solar radiation and reduced rainfall.
