Here are the rules for when to use "A, An

She has a dog.

EXCEPTIONS:
1. She is an honest woman.
2. Montevideo is a Uruguayan city.
3. She waited for an hour.
4. They work for a University in Germany.
DEFINITEARTICLE THE ; We use this article in the following cases:
1. To refer again to something that was already been mentioned.
Ex: You have to take a test. THE test takes an hour.
2. With plural states andcounties: USA, UK, NETHERLANDS, CZECH REPUBLIC, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, PHILIPPINES, BARBADOS, BAHAMAS.
Ex, She traveled to South Africa and she also visited the temples in THE Philippines.
3. withmountain ranges, oceans, seas and rivers.
Ex. Find THE Alps and THE Mediterranean Sea.
4. With names of theatres, cinemas and hotels.
Ex. Are you staying at THE Bridge Hotel?
5. With parts of theday.
Ex. Did they arrive in THE morning or in THE afternoon?
6. With superlatives.
Ex. Russia is THE biggest country in the world.
7. When only such thing exists.
Ex: THE sun is a star.
8.With musical instruments.
Ex- I play THE piano and THE violin.
ZERO ARTICLE. We use no article in the following cases.
1. With by + a means of transport. Ex: We travelled by – boat.
2. With thewords school, college, university, hospital, home church, when we don’t mean a particular one.
Ex: He is going to leave – school next year.
3. With meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Ex. We willhave – lunch at noon.
4. With languages and subjects.
Ex: She speaks - French. Ex. I love – History.
5. with games and sports.
Ex. I don’t play – baseball.
6. With streets, towns and...
