Founded in 1855, the university offers undergraduate, graduate and academic studies.
In 1882 George W. Atherton, a vigorous proponent of land-grant education, becamepresident of what had then become The Pennsylvania State College. He introduced engineering studies, and Penn State soon became one of the nation’s ten largest undergraduateengineering schools.
Penn State University is ranked among the top 15 public universities nationally.
The university's total enrollment for undergraduate studies in2009-10 was approximately 45,300 across its campuses.
Penn State offers more than 160 majors among all its campuses.
