The crowd cheers in excitement as a seemingly never ending mass of energetic young South Africans walk onto the field. They break into dance and the crowd goes wild. A voiceechoes through the stands and into the sky above the stadium, welcoming the world to South Africa. To the beat of the drums the celebration has started, it is clear that Johannesburg will be the host forworld soccer and global union. The opening ceremony is taking effect with great efficacy, Diego Maradona and Pele are responsible for presenting the World Cup, and accompanied by 160 worldchampions, an unprecedented event in the history of international football. Kings, heads of state, presidents of nations and international organizations, as well as local and foreign fans are witnessing thestart of the big event of the year.
“Brazil is on the way”, spectators realize that it has been a great prowess to qualify for the South Africa World Cup tournament. To the people of Germany, Brazil,England or Argentina, the World Cup is anything and everything. What happens on that soccer field will dictate the mood of the majority of folks of one of these countries for the foreseeable future. Thecrowd drapes themselves in flags and faces paint, consume as many pints of beer as possible during the pregame warm up, and scream at the television set during the match. The people on the seatsacclaim for a goal, they all wish to see their idols figure such as Mexican Cuauhtémoc Blanco posing as an Aztec warrior and they wish to see the player defend the goal, pass the ball and dribble theball, it is an ecstasy of happiness.
The CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) had taken long to define the teams that will participate on thetournament. The qualifiers were either one or two points apart on the standing board; it had been an intense and tight competition but at last Mexico, USA and Honduras qualified as CONCACAF representatives....
