Felicia: “My name is Captain Felicia Hudson, I am a critical care registered nurse. I grew in New Castle, Pennsylvania. My Dad is a pastor, my Mon is a minister, they havetheir own church. I have one older sister, one younger sister and brother. My job is about working with patients; making them better and know when I am there I will make difference in their lives.”

David: “I am David Overton, I am a med-surg orthopaedics nurse, I am a second lieutenant of the United States’ army. People have different … different kinds of motivation for why they are going intothe army; some people are voluntarily motivated, you know they want to get they student loans paid for; some people are patriotic they want to serve the country. For me, it has been something I have always wanted to do; I feel like I am contributing to something that’s greater than me, contributing to a cause that’s greater than me. To me, that’s all the motivation I need to stay in the army.”Gwen: “My name is Captain Gwen Mueller, I worked as a civilian nurse in the Chicago land area for about 10 years. I had sort of curved my path in life (and I was thinking) that I was pretty content to be a civilian nurse? And then I decided that I want some new challenges and so I moved forward and decided that the army would be a great new challenge and would allow me for more crewopportunities. It’s a very powerful job.”

Felicia: “I wanted to earn my own living and pay for my own education”

Gwen: “I went to a lot of classes, a lot of leadership classes, a lot of …uh, military-based classes that allow for me to expand my scope as an officer and as a professional.”

David: “Army paid for my nursing program, I did a … what’s called the green to gold program; they paid for school,my salary that I got while I was at school.”

Felicia: “I am working on my master’s degree, I am taking three classes, the army has a tuition assistance program. They actually pay a hundred percent.”

Gwen: “If you want to succeed in the critical care field, the army will give you the opportunity to do that; if you want to be an OB nurse will give you the opportunity to succeed in that; if youwant to become an advanced practice nurse the army will give you that opportunity. The army will give you the experience that you need to succeed.”

David: “When I graduated from nursing school I was commissioned as a second lieutenant of army, and I came on the active, I came back on the active duty.”

Gwen: “The pay on the military side I found to be more than on a civilian side, andworking for 10 year on the civilian side you sort of have to job-hop in order to make your money on the civilian sector.”

David: “Starting out I am at the same level as my peer group, but I will pass them pretty quickly, and a captain’s wage is around 70000 dollars a year.”

Gwen: “And they also have raises based on when you advance your rank, and those a large chunks of money.”

Gwen: “I had notoriginally wanted to deploy, it was an interesting thing for me because I was working away from life for a year.”

Felicia: “Working on the battlefield, and … stuff like that, there … there is a sense of pride.”

David: “It’s the mission that we have to accomplish is the job we do.”

“When I was deployed, I really had the ability to influence people’s lives; and I would have neverunderstood had I not been there. Anything that didn’t involve the job was taking on in a pure sense we have got to practice.”

Felicia: “It is important to serve your country; yes.”

Gwen: “My quality of life as a nurse and an officer is actually quite good”

Felicia: “My health care is free, my family’s health care is free; as for my sons, their health care is free. You can’t compete with that.”...
