Poverty in Mexico & Matamoros
Are you aware that 20 million people in Mexico live on less than two dollars a day?
Poverty refers to the condition of not having the means to afford basic humanneeds such as clean water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter. This is also referred to as absolute poverty.
Fifty million people, half of the Mexican population, live inpoverty, and 20 million of them live in extreme poverty. Unfortunately, most of the time the garbage is their only way of feeding, and sometimes, they don’t even eat anything. This critical situation inMexico and in the world is caused by three different factors. Now we have to learn more about these three main causes of poverty in Mexico.
The first cause of poverty in Mexico is the individualcondition. This refers to the circumstances and characteristics of poor people like the amount of education, intelligence, health, all have an influence on poverty. The absence of education is one of the mostsignificant factors that contribute to poverty because in many places there is no access to jobs for non-educated people.
The second cause of poverty has to do with the living place. Statisticsshows that people who live in areas far away from the cities are poorer because of the absence of communication and transportation in rural areas. That’s why the governments can’t provide services such aspotable water, electricity, shelter, food, health care, and education.
The third and maybe the most significant cause of poverty is the economy of the country. The International Monetary Fund andWorld Bank-prescribed structural modification policies have been applied in Mexico because the government doesn’t carry out enough policies to successful progress. The IMF and World Bank programs arethought to reduce poverty, but actually they are increasing it.
