No hay un consenso general en cuanto a la fecha de inicio del Imperio Bizantino. Para algunos autores la fecha clave es la fundación de Constantinopla en el año 330, en tanto que otros estudiosos consideran como acta de nacimiento del Imperio Bizantino la muerte de Teodosio I, en 395, cuando el Imperio Romano fue definitivamente dividido en dosmitades, oriental y occidental. Otros piensan que puede hablarse con propiedad de Imperio Bizantino a partir del momento en que fue depuesto el último emperador romano de Occidente, Rómulo Augústulo (476).
