PROJECT SUMMARY In December 2010, CEDESOL, Sobre la Roca, and the Kyoto Twist Solar Cooking Society formed a new agreement to introduce the benefits of solar cooking technology to rural areas within Bolivia. 30 members of theHuasa Rancho community chose to take this opportunity to receive the benefits of solar cookers and improve their quality of life. By registering the cooking habits of this community using mainly two fuel sources (gas and wood) and improving data collection, the project aimed to verify the project’s success by accurately recording carbon reduction. Throughout the project, new measuring methodswere implemented, that adhere to the Gold Standard methodology. Skilled data collectors conducted kitchen test and kitchen surveys in order to obtain the most accurate and scientific results. Thus, the project aimed to demonstrate the benefits that solar cookers provide in rural areas with regards to fuel savings, economic savings, environmental impact, health benefits, and cooking time. Furthermore, since the project was conducted primarily during Bolivia’s rainy season, which presents challenging conditions for solar cooking, it provided an opportunity to assess the usage of solar cookers as heat retaining devices. In addition to the various benefits this project sought to demonstrate in rural areas, it also sought to raise awareness of solar technology and increase education aboutenvironmental issues. The project began with a demonstration during which the functions and benefits of solar cookers were presented and explained to the local people as well as providing information on the project’s modalities. Thirty families in the community received solar cookers at reduced prices in exchange for active participation in training workshops and some volunteers agreed to allow...
