TEXT 13: EXPLOITATION IN THE WORKPLACE
Ask people about their jobs and they will often complain that they are overworked, underpaid, or both. However, we only need to pick up a newspaper to realizethe difference between the minor dissatisfactions of normal working life and the extreme exploitation that some people face on a daily basis.
There are numerous forms of exploitation, but the mostcommon involve employees working long hours, carrying out dangerous tasks or receiving too little money in return for their efforts. The people who have put up with some of the worst working conditionstend to be people at difficult stages of their careers, not only those who are beginning their working life but also those who are close to retirement age.
Many young people, even with goodqualifications, struggle to enter the employment market. 'Without experience I can’t get a job; says 23-year old Victor. 'But, without a job, how can I get experience?' Marisa has a degree in Leisure andTourism and hopes to become a hotel manager. At the moment she works as a receptionist and her goal seems very distant. I don’t have much experience so I expect to be paid a low salary; she says. 'Theproblem is that I work 70 hours a week. My contract says that I work "as required", so what can I do?'
So is this situation inevitable? Not according to campaigner Philippe Schwarz. 'Earnings shouldmatch effort; he insists. 'The more publicity cases are given the better. Perhaps eventually employers will be shamed into paying fair.
