DID THE TROJAN HORSE REALLY EXISTED OR IT WAS ONLY A MYTH?
The Trojan Horse is a tale from the Trojan War. The events in this story from the Bronze Age took place after Homer's Iliad, and before hisOdyssey. It was the stratagem that allowed the Greeks finally to enter the city of Troy and end the conflict.

In one version, after a fruitless 10-year siege, the Greeks constructed a huge woodenhorse, and hid a select force of 30 men inside. The Greeks pretended to sail away, and the Trojans pulled the horse into their city as a victory trophy. That night the Greek force crept out of thehorse and opened the gates for the rest of the Greek army, which had sailed back under cover of night. The Greek army entered and destroyed the city of Troy, decisively ending the war.

In the Greektradition, the horse is called Doúreios Híppos, the "Wooden Horse", in the Homeric Ionic dialect.

In the Greek poem The Iliad, the basis for Troy, Prince Paris of Troy steals the gorgeous Helen, ofGreece, from her husband, King Menelaus. The act brings the two nations to war, and eventually Greeks led by the warrior Achilles lay siege to Troy.

The poet Homer probably wrote the epic in theeighth or ninth century, B.C., several hundred years after the war is supposed to have taken place. Much of it is no doubt fantasy. There is, for example, no evidence that Achilles or even Helenexisted.

Archaeologists who have been digging into the myth of Homer's poem believethe legendary war may have been a process rather than a single event.

In northwestern Turkey, some archaeologists excavated the site believed to be Troy in 1870. Schliemann, one of thearchaeologist, was a German adventurer who took sole credit for the discovery, even though he was digging at the site, called Hisarlik, at the behest of British archaeologist Frank Calvert.
