"Considering Philosophy for Education: A Curmudgeonly Challenge to Commercialism, Reductionism, and the Quest for Certainty." By Dr. Deron Boyles

On October 14, 2010 I attended alecture by Dr. Deron Boyles, entitled "Considering Philosophy for Education: A Curmudgeonly Challenge to Commercialism, Reductionism, and the Quest for Certainty." This was a very interesting lecture.Dr. Boyles seemed like a very educated man and knew what he was talking about. He seems to have a lot of credentials. He was also very insightful. Though out his lecture I caught that he spokeabout 2 main points, there might have been three, but I did not catch the last point. The main points that he spoke about were commercialization and grant. At the beginning of his speech he spoke abouta student that asked if they were going to get their money’s worth if she took his class. I thought that was a good way to start the speech, especially since most of us in the room were collegestudents and often wonder that same question. One thing he spoke about was how Rice went to good schools to see what they were doing right and try to help other schools see what they can do to helpincorporate what the good schools were doing to improve. One thing that stuck out in my mind was how he spoke about the program book it. I remember as a child I participated in book it. Book it was theprogram set up by Pizza Hut that would give free personal pan pizza to the students if they read a certain amount of books each month. I am guilty of just saying I read the books when I had not readthem or reading books that were not challenging for me. I’m sure most kids do that. He talked about how it helps that business but does it help the student? What he meant by that was if it was away to really make kids read or was it just a way to get business. Because most likely the children get a free pizza, but what are the others in the family going to eat? That is where the business...
