Free will
1. What position on moral responsibility do Free Will, Determinism, and Compatibilism take?
Free will is when you chose to act one way rather than another, because you could have acteddifferently. If this is true then moral responsibility can be punish due to that will was done intentionally, therefore, determinism must be false. Determinism is when your actions is determined bypast causes that bring the effect and you are not free to have acted differently. This states that if committed a crime you could not have done otherwise, due to that you have no free will.Compatibilism is the statement that Free will and determinism are compatible. This states that although your action was totally determined, you acted freely because if you had wanted to act differently, youcould have. In Nagel’s book he says that “It was determined in advance that you would choose the cake, but it is still true that nothing would have prevented you from having a peach if you had chosen itinstead of cake, freewill.”
2. Why might determinism undermine moral responsibility?
Determinism undermines moral responsibility due to that you cannot hold someone else responsible for what theyhave done since they had no options. To blame would be injustice if what they did was determined in advance. An example is if someone would kill, according to determinism his nature and situation wouldbe determined. Everything done before and after was in advanced determined earlier circumstance. This concludes that possibility to hold a person responsible for actions which he had no control over.Punishing someone is trying to influence his behavior than holding him responsible for what he did. Nagel says that: “It does not make sense to blame someone for doing what it was impossible for himnot to do”.
3. In what sense can a determinist believe we should punish people?
